    We Did It - 8K 5 Miles...

Ok we are into it now... We did a 5 K yesterday with some serious runners.  They were thin and legs up to well you know, they are the people not on this blog!  Anyway, we were really considering not going, whimping out, sleeping in.  And then Saturday morning, sprang out of bed, put the running clothes on and took off!  When we got there I got real nervous, I knew I would be bringing up the rear, but I swallowed deeply and then the gun went off and I was in the port a john... Ouch oops run to the starting line and good ole Bobby waited on me we took off, after about 2 minutes I told Bobby to go on and run....I kept up with a group of young girls for about 2 miles...then me and 1 other kept plugging along... I would run some, the she would pass me.  At each mile they had someone telling you how you were doing.  Mile 1 didn't hear, Mile 2 did he say 20 something, Mile 3 I heard 33 minutes.  Can't be right...and then Mile 4, 51 minutes, oh my kick it Mary Jo, you are behind.  Me and my friend are kicking, passing each other trying not to be the last place.  Then I see Bobby, coming back to help me at the end.  I pick up the pace try to catch my friend but to no avail, youth wins, she was 18, I am 48!  But that is OK.  I finished 5 miles in 1:03:15.  That is 1 hour, 3 minutes and 15 seconds... That is 12:44 pace!!!  Ok this might not mean anything to non runners but for a 48 year old that has carried and anchor for years it was incredible!
And of course I can't go without saying how great Bobby did!  He finished in 50:06 with a pace of 10:05.  This is fantastic.  For two who just started training this has been a great experience.  We don't have another race planned yet but I think we will be looking for one in April or May somewhere.

    Intentionally Living

Bobby and I are doing a 5 miler tomorrow!  I have a pulled hamstring and he has a slight bug but by golly we are going to do it!  Tonight they had a pre-race dinner and we went and one of my favorite people I have ever worked with spoke and I thought about all of us.  Dr. Joan Perry is 50 years old has 5 boys and runs triathlons.  But that is not why I think so much of her.  She really practices what she preaches: Intentionally living, mentally, physically and spiritually.  Tonight she spoke of the 3 D's of that practice:

Dag gum it - Decide to do something

Determine your goal and go for it and

    Do It!

She spoke of a young patient with bone cancer that taught her that during her residency at UNC.  You see I was a nurse in the ED when she did her residency and I remembered her then.  Fast Forward 15 years and we past each other in the hallway of the hospital where I work and we looked at each other and said "I remember you".  That was 15 years ago and still today she inspires me to do my best.  She live intentionally and now I can say I do too! Isn't that what it is all about.  Live intentionally.  Make good choices.  Oh well, I am ready now to go do my 5!

    Funny Story - Mary Jo

Yesterday I was in a big hurry to get to work, went upstairs, got an older pair of pants off the rack and ran out the door (they didn't need ironing).  When I got to work I had a breakfast to attend and ran straight to it.  What I did notice was my pants were falling off.  I couldn't hold them up and they didn't have belt loops.  But when I got to the breakfast someone I haven't seen in a while yelled across the room...Girlfriend your drawers (southern for pants) are falling off what in the world are you doing??? I cracked up.  I immediately went to find my trusty safety pin and last night I retired size 16~~.  I can't wear them anymore!  Have a great weekend!th_safetypin

I am a Nervous Wreck - Mary Jo

I have been reading how a lot of you are running in races, that is fantastic.  My sister got me involved a couple of years ago and I have been doing it ever since.  But now I have really gone and did the big one.  I am directing, in charge of, coordinating a RACE this weekend!  I am a member of Rotary and last year I really wanted to promote Rotary and Health in my hometown.  So I thought what the heck, let's have a race...call it Rotary, Run for The Health of It.  Do you know how much work goes into those things.  I have T-shirts, Sponsors, Water, Fire Department helping... OMG...but I don't have but about 30 runners signed up.  Dang it, it is like having a big birthday party and no one shows... The members of Rotary are going to be so upset if this doesn't turn out.  OK I just need my friends to send the love my way... so that my first ever Rotary, Run for the Health of It.. won't flop.  Later friends..

Look Out Betty Sue Here Comes Bobby - Mary Jo

Ok know it is not nice to laugh at your partner, but sometimes it is funny.  I had a church function the other night and couldn't go to workout.  When I got home, Bobby and his buddy (our cat Tux) were in the chair chilling.  Then I noticed his leg.  I screamed what happened!  Well he was on the treadmill on cool down, missing me I am sure, and there was a lot of people and activity that night.  He was talking to a young woman who has a young son who was bored and fidgety trying  to help them and BOOM, one foot stepped off the moving treadmill and the other didn't.  He went flying back and got treadmill burn on one leg.  OK OK I know not nice to laugh at your spouse when injured but I can't help it... First thing I asked...did you jump up like Betty Sue?!?  Of course he did.  Here is the picture.  What do you think?

What a Difference 10 Weeks Can Make - Mary Jo

As I sit here writing I am just like most of us, I am amazed what can happen when you make your mind up to do something and stick to it!  We exercised, counted calories and got rest!  We kept going back to the basics.  Bobby and I didn't have a stellar weight loss this week but we were expecting to plateau at any moment.  That doesn't take away from what we have accomplished!  The proof is in the pudding...actually the pudding is going going gone!  Here are today's Pics and we have nothing but to be proud of our accomplishments:

    March11

It feels so good to be losing this weight but it even feels better to be losing with all our new friends.  This has been an opportunity that we are so thankful for.  Could we have done it without all of you?  Probably not.  Your support and friendship has meant that much to us.

And to let everyone know, we are not through!  Our goals are being set,  I have 15 more to lose and Bobby has 13.  We will continue our journey with this blog and community.  And post our success!  Here are our stats for the 10 weeks:

OK. I really really can't believe you have lost this much weight. I thought it was TV reality shows makeing it happen. But after seeing the pictures I am amazed that it can happen.

One weight loss tip that you gave has stuck in my mind over & over. "Quit eating the empty calories (non-healthful)! I have to eat so much "good calories" to get my total per day".  I now "think" about what I put in my mouth. Ex. I usually devour a pack of saltine crackers, bread, low calorie cookies, bagels, cereal, etc. Now to me ...it is like eating paper or cardboard. It 'clicked" for me even after all the previous weight-loss lectures.

I have enjoyed the blog... Stay motivated even if you reach a plateau. Just think what your possiblities will be ... HEALTHY & FEEL GOOD!

Remeber to keep supporting each other! Good Luck... Your little sis!.
This really made our day!  Thanks Sis... Oh by the way...I am going to catch you...only 12 more pounds... (she is at least 3 inches taller) but still I am going to catch up with you....

Today is Tough - Mary Jo

I knew yesterday was going to be a long day but you never realized what each day can turn to.  Work is crazy and I was so busy, (I think most of us can relate) and during the day I received a text message from my next door neighbor's son that changed my day.  You see he is not just my next door neighbor son he is considered "my other son".  Ever since he was three I have been his Jomamma.  I am not sure why, other than love, he has always been part of our family.  Well he goes to UNC in Chapel Hill, he is a senior and yes he is a Morehead Scholar (a group of 50 each year get full scholarship to UNC a very close group).  His friend Eve was shot and killed, brutally.  I called him immediately and he was crying so hard.  It broke my heart.  I wanted so badly to reach through the phone and hug him but I couldn't.  I just cried and cried and told him I loved him.  I lost my best friend in college and remember how lonely that feeling is.  It is the first time to experience loss without your family.  There was nothing I could do but listen.  Last evening, I was taking a friend to a church retreat and my heart was so broken but was blessed to be around such saintly women.  I did call him back and let him know that I was there for him, but oh the sadness for such a useless loss of life.  She was a wonderful girl with so much to give to the world.  Times like this it really makes you realize that life can be short and if we don't do everything in our power to live it someone could take it away in an instant.  I know I am not usually like this on the blog but what I do need is those of you who believe in prayer, pray for peace for her family, her friends and all families that are dealing with violence and such tragic loss.

OK We have Gone and Done It Now - Mary Jo

After finishing the Relay Marathon in Myrtle Beach, SC we found out that they were going to discontinue that part of the race.  We (my crazy family) were so disappointed.  Well my crazy brother didn't let that get to him he e-mailed us today and said...DISNEY HALF MARATHON...January 09!  Ok we did it we signed up and now we have committed.  You have to keep a 16 minute mile or they will sweep you... Pick you up and put you in a van and take you away! Now that is motivation for training.  Look out Mickey here we come!

    Reflection Day - Mary Jo

Today is a day that I don't have anything really planned.  Those are so far and few in my life so I think I will reflect on the successes of the last two months and where we go from here!  I just read and e-mail that really made me think of where this goes after the "Contest" is over.  Do we all lose steam?  Do we continue to support each other?  Will we be able to start a new group... Skinny People Match Up?  Here is the quote

"You see, we need to be reminded that the MAGIC doesn't happen on the 1st mile, it happens when you go the EXTRA mile for yourself and for others.
Anybody who knows anything about weight training or dieting will tell you that you get most of your results from those last 2-3 reps you don't want to do, or from those last few weeks that you really don't want to diet.
    But here's the catch.
Most people quit on themselves and their dreams, right when it gets tough.
Unfortunately, they then never get to taste the MAGIC that could have taken place for them. That same magic that could have transformed their body from ordinary to extraordinary.
And that TASTE is so sweet, it really is unfortunate that more people don't give themselves the gift of going the extra mile, so they too can enjoy living life in the body of their dreams."

Let's not quit.  If anyone out there is feeling like they haven't made the success they needed then let us know...let the group help you.  I am just now at my "fat weight"  the weight that I use to say if I get to that weight I need to do something.  Well now the hard part... I need to lose 16 to 20 more pounds.  Do I need a trainer, sure all of us could benefit from a Bob or Jillian.  Will Bobby and I get a trip to California, like all of us, we all deserve it, will we get it... maybe, maybe not.  Do we stop now, NO!  I need the support from my partner Bobby but I also need the support from all my new best friends in the MPMU world.  Thank you all for what you have given me...my life back.  Thank you all for being here and let's continue the MAGIC!

PS... I went to the gym and practiced what I preached.  I have never been able to run/walk a mile under 14:00 minutes...Well today I cranked it up and lo and behold my first mile was under 13 and my next 2 were 13:20... Wooo Hoo!!!  The MAGIC was awesome...

Another Weekend Spent Playing - Mary Jo

Bobby and I had a quiet weekend just hanging out in Snow Hill.  Our son came home from college and played in a tennis tournament in town.   Bobby and I ran yesterday and today I played tennis and he ran.  The only bad thing about hanging out in Snow Hill is the food we are subjected to.  Last night was a "Turtle Stew"  yes my friend, turtles.  Bobby likes it a lot, I am OK with it.  With that comes fried bread, desserts and sweat tea!  Ok i passed on the bread and dessert and drank water.  I will not report for Bobby I will let the scales do that!  Hope you guys have a great week!

Weigh In Day! Goals Being Met- Mary Jo

Well I am waiting (or should I say weighting) patiently for Bobby to weigh.  I lost 2 more pounds this week!  That puts my total at 21 lbs.  3 weeks to go I should exceed my goal of 25 lbs.  Bobby just anncounced he lost 2 lbs too this week.  We continue to exercise, eat right and get rest.  Wow who would have thought it.  One thing I did do was to increase my calories.  I really have to force myself to get them all in during the day.  Who would ever thought it! Here we are passing the baton at the Myrtle Beach Marathon race this past weekend!  We met that goal too.  Bobby ran 6 miles in 11:30 minute pace and I ran 5 miles in 13:45 pace!
